The President of the Nigeria Referees Association, Mr. Sanni Zubair, has indicated that preparations are underway for the implementation of video assistant referees (VAR) in the Nigeria Professional Football League starting from the forthcoming 2023/24 season.
The eagerly anticipated new season commences this Saturday with the inaugural match between 3SC and Plateau United in Ibadan.
Mr. Zubair emphasized that the introduction of VAR is expected to significantly elevate the performance of referees, particularly as a substantial number of league matches will now be broadcast using recently acquired AI cameras.
He added that the association is working closely with the NPFL broadcast partner to achieve the goal.
Zubair, a retired FIFA-badged referee, is optimistic of improved officiating in the upcoming season.
